Abstract

The integration between marine information management is important for a sustainable marine management, where it will balance the impact of environmental, social and economic of marine area. In Malaysia, the management of marine area has been autonomous, heterogeneous and distributed between each other, resulting in isolated marine spatial information. An interview with Malaysia’s marine organization was carried; 1) to identify current practice in implementing Geographical Information System GIS, 2) to identify the cooperation related to information system management inside the organization and 3) to obtain the views on cooperation between units, departments or organizations related, that is needed to improve the current information system in the future. Results show the need for close cooperation within the organization and a collaboration between organizations to integrate marine spatial information. With integrated marine information management, it will help in enabling rapid and right decisions through an environmental, social and economic way. It also will bring together the diverse communities that are involved in marine management.
