Dear Colleague,

Welcome to the January issue of FIG Newsletter. Register now for the FIG Congress 2018 and get the Early Bird discount. FIG Foundation Academic Research Grant 2018 and Ph.D. Scholarships 2018

FIG Foundation offers two types of grants:
Academic Research Grants
of up to 40,000 euros spread over four years. The grants are aimed at emerging researchers on the threshold of their research career. Deadline 31 March 2018

Ph.D. Scholarship Grants of up to 4,000 euros to PhD students. Deadline 1 February 2018

Article of the Month

Each month on the FIG web site we publish a paper called the Article of the Month.

January 2018 is written by Daniel Páez, Abbas Rajabifard & Joaquín Andrés Franco Gantiva, Colombia: Methodological proposal for measuring and predicting Urban Green Space per capita in a Land-Use Cover Change model: Case Study in Bogota. This paper was presented at the Commission 7 Annual Meeting in Bogota Colombia. It describes the problem of lack of sustainable urban planning and territorial ordinance plans which have led to nullification, fragmentation and reduction of green space and strategic ecosystems within cities.

The Congress is organised by FIG and the Turkish Chamber of Survey and Cadaster Engineers (CSCE) and will take place 6 – 11 May 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey.

This geographical area has not hosted any FIG Congress and General Assembly before. Istanbul is one of the most impressive and attractive cities at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, where unique beauties of the West and the East come together.

The four day conference will offer an exciting and variated choice of technical sessions, technical tours and of course also the opportunity to explore the wonderful city and surroundings of Istanbul as well as the famous Turkish hospitality. The technical programme is now taking shape and is an exciting mixture of sessions composed from the open call for papers, special sessions, sessions organised jointly with our partners such as UN-Habitat/GLTN and FAO and of course the highligh of each day, the plenary sessions. The plenary sessions cover the following areas:

  • Urban development
  • Modern technology usage for our profession
  • Rural development
  • Spatially enabled societies

Social events and tours

The Congress is not only about technical sessions, learning and presentations. Also very important is the networking part of the FIG Congress. The  Welcome Reception is included in the registration fee, and it will be possible to meet old colleagues/friends from all over the world and to make new acquaintances especially if you participate for the first time. A traditional Turkish Dinner is organised at the Military Museum, and the festive Gala Dinner will take place on a Boat on Bosphorus. Read more

Annual Meeting – FIG Commission 7

The Annual Meeting of FIG Commission 7 took place in Cartagena, Colombia. The meeting was combined with the Conference on Cadastre for Emergencies and Disasters - Challenges and opportunities for islands and coastlines, which was co-organised with FIG Commission 9.

Commission 3 workshop and Annual Meeting 2017

Commission 3 workshop and Annual Meeting 2017 held on 27 - 30 November 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal was a great succes. More than seventy members from five different continents participated. 


Africa Regional Network: Challenges and Opportunities in Facing the SDG’s

Report of the Annual Africa Regional Network Capacity Development workshop held on 21 - 23rd November 2017 partnering with ESRI Rwanda and hosted by the Institute of Applied Science- Ruhengeri.

Visit to Vietnam for the preparations of FIG Working Week 2019

The Working Week is now taking shape. FIG Vice President Mikael Lilje and director Louise Friis-Hansen visited the local organisers of the conference, and met with the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Environment. The logo element for FIG Working Week 2019 shows the Temple of Literature, Hanoi.

Land Use and Green Development in Rural and Urban development

Shanghai International Symposium of Land and Future took place 24-25 November 2017 in Shanghai, China. The sympoisum had land use and green development  in both rural and urban areas on the agenda and land consolidation.
