Appendix to item 21: Academic membership

BECOME AN ACADEMIC MEMBER OF FIG

Academic Member of FIG

In 1998 FIG launched a new category of membership for organisations, institutions or agencies which promote education or research in one or more of the surveying disciplines.

A particular feature of this initiative is that it will link universities or their faculties or departments that are responsible for surveying education with practising surveyors in nearly 100 countries and with companies which provide commercial services in support of the surveying profession.

The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) is an international, UN-recognised non government organisation (NGO) whose purpose is to support international collaboration for the progress of surveying in all fields and applications. It is a federation of national associations and is the only international body that represents all surveying disciplines.

The other membership categories aremember associations - leading professional societies representing one or more of the surveying disciplines in their respective countries;affiliates - groups of surveyors undertaking professional activities but not fulfilling criteria for membership as member associations; andsponsors - organisations, institutions or agencies which operate or provide commercial services in support of the surveying profession

The Surveying Education Database

A major benefit for Academic Members of FIG is enhanced use of the Surveying Education Database (SEDB). Any academic department offering graduate and post-graduate courses in any surveying discipline can place a standard entry on the SEDB which currently contains information on 200 institutes and 400 surveying courses in more than 40 countries. Departments are responsible for up-dating the information which they place on the SEDB.

Academic Members of FIG can add extra pages to their standard entries. These extra pages might promote

special courses

exchange programmes

distance learning courses

CPD activities

research-projects or

give a brief educational and scientific profile of the institution.

The SEDB will also provide the home for the FIG Academic Forum for dialogue between FIG’s academic members and which could lead to the development of a Virtual Academy. Issues which the Forum might address include:

an electronic notice board for general information

information on current exchange programmes with requests for partners

research programmes, with requests for partners

a platform for establishing educational co-operation projects.

FIG Academic Membership - Other Benefits

An academic member is entitled

to nominate correspondents to the nine technical commissions of FIG

otherwise to contribute to the work of the commissions

to send representatives to the meetings of the General Assembly, but without a vote and to take part in technical meetings, conferences, workshops, etc

to receive all material disseminated to members including

the quarterly FIG bulletin

the FIG annual review

copies of all new FIG publications

information on forthcoming events

commission newsletters

In addition

The names of academic members are listed in each issue of the FIG bulletin and FIG annual review

A short article will be published on the institution in the FIG bulletin when it is accepted as academic member.

Academic members may use the FIG logo in combination with the words "Academic member".
